Critical Reading
Critical reading applies to non-fiction writing in which the author puts forth a position or seeks to
make a statement. Critical reading is active reading. It involves more than just understanding what
an author is saying. Critical reading involves questioning and evaluating what the author is saying,
and forming your own opinions about what the author is saying. Here are the things you should do
to be a critical reader.
阅读纪实文学适合用批评性的阅读方法,因为在非文学类作品里,作者常常会提出某种观点
或是寻找作者的态度。批评性的阅读方法是一种主动性很强的阅读方法。它涉及到的不仅仅
是理解作者所说的话。批评性的阅读方法还涉及到质疑和评估作者所说的话,涉及到作者所
说的话要形成你自己的观点。如果你想要成为一名有批评性思维的读者,在这里我列出一些
你应该做到的。
关系副词引导的定语从句=介词+which
Critical reading applies to non-fiction writing in which the author puts forth a position or seeks to
make a statement.
in which 引导后面的定语从句,修饰先行词 writing.
eg: We passed a pool in which ducks were swimming.
我们走过一个池塘,塘中鸭子在戏水。
apply to
apply to 使用于;适用于
apply to sb./sth.= be applicable to sb./sth.
apply to sb for sth: 向某人申请某物
eg: Loyalty applies to various kinds of relationships.
忠诚适用于不同的人际关系。
put forth
put forth 产生;提出
eg: In spring the trees put forth new leaves.
春天,树木长出新叶子。
eg: Darwin put forth the theory of evolution.
达尔文提出了进化论。
what 引导名词性从句
It involves more than just understanding what an author is saying.
what 引导名词性从句
eg: What he wanted was only a warm place to live in.
他当时想要的只是一处可以栖息的暖和之处。
involve
involve 卷入;包含;牵涉
involve in 使…参与,使…陷入
involve with 牵连,涉及
eg: Don’t involve me in your quarrel.
不要把我卷进你们的争吵中。
more than
more than 超过;不只是
eg: His rudeness is more than I can stand.
他的粗鲁超过了我的忍受程度。
Consider the context of what is written
You may be reading something that was written by an author from a different cultural context than
yours. Or, you may be reading something written some time ago in a different time context than
yours. In either case, you must recognize and take into account any differences between your
values and attitudes and those represented by the author.
仔细思考作者的写作背景。你可能正在读一篇与你的文化背景截然不同的作者所写的文章。
或者,你可能正在读一篇写于不同于你所处的时代的文章。不论哪种情况,你必须能搞清楚
同时好好考虑你的价值观和态度与作者的不同之处。

eg: We are absolutely different people than we were.

take into account/consideration
take into account/consideration 考虑到;顾及
eg: When deciding what to do wo must take into account/consideration all the difficulties.
在决定做某件事情的时候,我们必须把所有的困难都考虑进去。
represent
represent 描述;表现
eg: He failed to accurately represent the stages of that transformation.
他未能确切描述出那次变革的不同阶段。
Question assertions made by the author.
Don’t accept what is written at face value. Before accepting what is written, be certain that the
author provides sufficient support for any assertions made. Look for facts, examples, and statistics
that provide support.Also, look to see if the author has integrated the work of authorities.
合理质疑作者所做出的论断。对于作者写出来的不要全盘接受。你在接受作者的观点之前,
要确保作者提供了足够多的论据来支持其论点。你要仔细查看支持论断的事实、举例和统计
数据。同时,你要查看作者是否参考了权威专家的著作。
accept/take…at face value
accept/take...at face value 相信表面;信以为真
eg: You shouldn't take anything she says at face value.
她的话你绝对不能只听表面意思。
statistics
statistics 名词复数, 统计数字;统计资料
不可数名词, 统计学
eg: There are no reliable statistics for the number of deaths in the battle.
关于战争中阵亡人数没有可靠的统计数字。
eg: Statistics is the science of gathering and analyzing data.
统计学是一门收集和分析数据的科学。
if
if 是否 引导名词性从句
eg: The doctor rayed her leg to find out if the bone was broken.
医生用 X 光检查她的腿是否断了。
